A Chronological and Sequential survey of Constitutional development in Nigeria. Focus will be on colonial constitutions i.e. Richard, Macpherson, Lyttleton and Independent constitution. It will also look at constitutions of post independent Nigeria e.g. Republican, 1979, 1989 and fourth Republic.

It covers things like the evolution of the Federal system; Inter governmental relations, and role of military on the Nigeria government and Politics. Contending paradigms in contemporary political analysis, their philosophical and ideological roots, as well as evaluation: elite approach, group theory, functional systems and communications theory, basic concepts and elements of game theory and political gaming, structural analysis, theories of political development; the new political economy.

Political Sociology.

The course is a comparative examination of the inter-relationship between law and politics in different African countries by studying significance of the judicial process during the colonial and independence period. The first section deals with concepts of law, what it is, how laws arise and how it became institutionalized. The second part deals with the judicial process, specifically the system of criminal justice which translate the abstract concerns of law into concrete institutions and policies are analyzed in terms of who benefits and who does not.

The course examines the involvement of the Military in Politics and its consequences in selected countries across the world. It also scrutinizes the interdependence of civil and military types; the military in the foundation of states; impacts of social structures and ethnic or class conflict upon military organizational procedure and behaviors; the problem of civilian control of the military; the role of armies in revolution; the phenomenon and definition of the military-industrial- complex, ubiquity of military extractive tendency; explaining the stability or instability of civil-military relation in a comparative setting.

The course examines the challenges to national security posed by the unipolar world, problems of border clashes, ethnics and religious crisis and policy solution to them.

Urban Life and Politics.

The course examine the fundamental roles of international law and its relation to the state and the individual, contemporary international norms, agreements, and negotiations, their influence on the response to a changing international system.

The course examines political parties/pressure groups and their functions; a comparative analysis of political parties and pressure groups in selected countries in the world; history of political parties and pressure groups in Nigeria from the colonial era to present; a critical analysis of political parties and pressure groups under the 1999 constitution.

The course will expose students to the role and impacts of the mass media in international politics. Basic issues such as ownership pattern, ideological leanings of media owners and operatives; media economics shall be analyzed. This will be done to shed light on the role of the leading world media such as the BBC, VOA, VON, RFI, Radio Moscow, Radio Beijing, Channel Africa, CNN, Al-Jazeera, etc., in their efforts to influence international relations. As far as possible, empirical examples will be used, with students doing assigned case studies.

The course attempts to examine the role of government in the management of the modern economy with special reference to Nigerian and other African countries: It deals with the relationships between government and private enterprise and examines some political issues such as the role of foreign capital in the domestic economy, the questions of foreign aid, technology and expertise. A major part of the course examines the problem of development planning and administration of planning as well as the issue of balanced regional planning. Finally, the questions of indigenization of the economy and self-reliance are discussed in relation to the problem of dependency on the international economic system.

The course examines the major economic and political problems of development in the third world, internal constraints and contradictions impeding development.

The course will examine the internal setting of Nigeria’s Foreign policy Examine the trends on Nigerian Foreign Policy since independence showing the domestic and foreign settings Nigeria’s regional and continental stands etc.

Students are expected to demonstrate the potential for scholarship by writing an original essay in any of the sub-disciplines of Political Science, with the approval of Head of the Department and supervised by an appointed lecturer of the department.This essay is expected expose students to the practical application of the techniques of research methods. A research proposal should be submitted to the Department at the end of 300 level courses, while they were expected to collect their data during the first semester of 400 level, however, the main write-up is expected to be completed during the second semester. The research project report is expected to be an independent effort of the candidate; originality is strongly encouraged while Plagiarisms are not allowed.
